Errol Spence Jr vs Terence Crawford tips: A historic fight ignored by mainstream, beloved by purists

Planet Sport takes a closer look at this weekend's blockbuster fight between Errol Spence Jr and Terence Crawford.

Errol Spence Jr and Terence Crawford square off this weekend in a bout which has been dubbed as one of the biggest of our generation - yet incredibly, few outside of the boxing circle know anything about it.

Spence Jr and Crawford are kings of the welterweight division and hold all four major championships. The two men boast 67 professional fights between them - all victories, 52 by way of knockout.

A fight between these men has been in the making for years with some arguing that perhaps it has come a tad too late.

Whether that's true or not remains to be seen, though there's no denying that the winner of this Las Vegas classic will be crowned as the undisputed chief of the welterweight division and possibly stamp their name in the history books as one of the best ever at 147-pounds.

The stakes could not be any higher. The undisputed championship, the history, the acclaim is there.

Yet the truth is that this fight has failed to capture the imagination - or more importantly the attention - of the wider public.

Boxing die-hards will compare this to Floyd Mayweather vs Manny Pacquiao. Some may say it's as big as Sugar Ray Leonard vs Thomas Hearns.

Yet sadly, Spence Jr against Crawford will likely draw less viewership and less money than the upcoming freak-fight event between Tyson Fury and Francis Ngannou.

Today in boxing, entertainment trumps class and celebrities overshadow warriors.

A point exemplified by the fact an eight-round bout between novice boxer Tommy Fury and YouTuber Jake Paul generated more interest than a generational bout between arguably two of the best boxers in the world today.

There is, however, a glimmer of hope. Should this weekend's bout between Spence Jr and Crawford live up to expectations, one of these men could thrust themselves into the mainstream. Question is, who will it be.
Spence Jr arrives in Las Vegas having fought once since his victory over Danny Garcia in December 2020. That one win came in April 2022 when he picked up a TKO victory over Yordenis Ugas.
Crawford's last outing saw him knock out David Avanesyan in the sixth round - his tenth straight fight which failed to go the distance.

Both men are smart and possess enough power to end a fight in an instant. While Spence Jr has the propensity to drop people quicker, Crawford is notorious for breaking down his opponents.

It's unlikely that one of these men will dominate proceedings in Las Vegas. In fact, it may all come down to who has the most in the tank.
Crawford to pick up a split decision win is our tip ahead of this classic encounter.
