AJ jokes about his chance meeting with the Gypsy King in Marbella...
Heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua has opened up about a chance encounter with WBC king Tyson Fury in Marbella.
The British pair just happened to be enjoying their downtime in the city on Spain's Costa del Sol - it was a total coincidence according to promoter Eddie Hearn.
The pair are expected to meet in the ring next year with the two camps said to have agreed to a two-fight deal 'in principle'.
Before the great British face-off can take place, Fury is scheduled to meet Deontay Wilder for the third instalment of their blockbuster feud.Fury vs Joshua is the biggest prospective fight in professional boxing right now, but the meeting of the men on the streets of Marbella was a cordial one.
"It's only right me and him will bump heads soon," Joshua told Sky Sports.
"We'll put on a great show for the British public for the world public. It's going to be a massive fight. I'm looking forward to it.
"What was cheeky about the situation was that he couldn't even get out of the car and offer me a drink. It wasn't bad.
"He was just driving down the strip, and I was walking down the strip, and we just bumped into each other.
"I don't know how he saw me because I had my mask on, my hat on and everything, he's obviously got his eye on me. He was probably following me around," Joshua laughed.
"He blew his cover. All respect to him, he was with his wife as well. All respect to her as well, humble family. Good luck to them whatever they do."
When will Joshua v Pulev happen?
While Fury has a fight with Wilder and maybe even Dillian Whyte standing between him and the much-anticipated fight, Joshua faces a battle to return to full fitness.
Joshua says that his recovery from a knee injury that saw him photographed on crutches was progressing smoothly. His camp have agreed to a fight against Kubrat Pulev, which had to be rescheduled due to the coronavirus pandemic and Joshua’s injury.
"How am I physically? I'm on my feet doing my 10,000 steps. I'm in the gym smashing the heavy bag, smashing the pads.
"The knee is good," Joshua insisted.
"I'm around good professionals. My pain threshold is quite high so I'm ready to crack on and do things my way.
"What's an injury? There is no mental weakness; I only know mental toughness. But when the people above tell me: 'We want you to get better in this way', I have to follow orders from the professionals.
"I speed up the process because I live good, I eat good, I don't drink. I'm back on my feet now. It's a blessing because I've missed boxing.
"It has been a difficult period of my life, and I need to channel my focus into being the best I can be, live good, sleep good, punch up Kubrat Pulev in a few months.
"I don't have a solid date, so it has been difficult."
