USA beats Federer’s Switzerland

2012-02-12 09:22:11

In one of the biggest upsets of this Davis Cup weekend, Switzerland were dumped out as Roger Federer suffered his second successive defeat in the hands of the USA.

Having lost both Friday’s singles rubbers, Switzerland needed to win Saturday’s doubles match in order to remain in the tie.

Switzerland fielded their strongest line-up with Federer, the world number three, partnering Stanislas Wawrinka.

The duo seized the early initiative against Mike Bryan and player Mardy Fish before the momentum swung in the favour of the Americans, who claimed a 4-6 6-3 6-3 6-3 victory.

“It feels pretty good to win these,” 30-year-old Fish told the Davis Cup website.

“I certainly know what it’s like to lose, and it’s not a great feeling. This guy [Mike Bryan] is the greatest doubles player of all time, and I’m just trying to play my part.”

As for Federer, he was magnanimous in defeat. “I thought we actually played pretty well,” he said,

“It was again a high standard of match from both sides, with not much between us. We had our chances but maybe they were a touch better than us, and that shows in the score.

“We played well for a long time, but we had a couple of games when we struggled a bit too much. But they did well and got the victory they deserved over the weekend.”

In other results, Spain are through to the quarter-finals after beating Kazakhstan 3-0 while Argentina, who they beat in last year’s final, saw off Germany when David Nalbandian and Eduardo Schwank beat Tommy Haas and Philipp Petzschner.

The Czech Republic are also through while Austria and Serbia will play again on Sunday after Russia and Sweden both produced doubles wins, leaving their ties poised at 2-1.
