Former world No 1 Kim Clijsters will miss the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells due to injury.
Clijsters, who hasn’t played a competitive match since losing to eventual champion Victoria Azarenka in the Australian Open semi-finals, has been forced to withdraw from the tournament with an ankle injury.
“I’m very disappointed,” she said in a statement.
“Indian Wells has been a very special tournament for me, winning in 2003 and again in 2005 when I returned from injury.
“I have great memories of Indian Wells and have always enjoyed the fan support there. I wish the tournament a great success this year.”
The 28-year-old Belgian has struggled with injuries the past few months and has admitted that 2012 is likely to be her final year on the WTA tour.
