There appears to be no stopping Victoria Azarenka at the moment after the world No 1 claimed her third title of the year by winning the WTA Qatar Open.
The Belarusian lost only three games as she beat US Open champion Samantha Stosur 6-1 6-2 in just 67 minutes on Sunday to take her 2012 record to 17 consecutive victories.
Azarenka, who now has 10 career titles to her name, broke Stosur five times to take her record against the Australian to 5-0.
“It feels amazing to win this title. I have been coming here quite a few times, also for the WTA Championships, and I never even reached the final, so for me it’s extra special to win here. I really like this tournament a lot,” she said.
“She has a huge serve, and the first shot, that’s where she puts the opponent on the run, and you run so far behind the baseline. I tried to take that away from her.”
Stosur, who lost in the first round of the Australian Open last month, is happy that she made it to the final and paid tribute to Azarenka.
“It’s been great to be able to turn around my form so quickly after a disappointing month first up, so I’m really pleased that I have been able to pick it up and make it to the final,” she said.
“As far as tonight goes, I think she played very well, very solid, as usual.”
