Atletico Madrid vs Inter Milan tips and predictions: Back Italians to secure progression

Inter secured a 1-0 lead against Atletico Madrid in Milan but goalscorer Marko Arnautovic is ruled out for the second leg with an injury.

Since 2006, Inter Milan haven’t failed to qualify for the UEFA Champions League after winning the first leg of a two-legged knockout tie.

On the other hand, Atletico haven’t turned around a first-leg deficit since 2016 when they eliminated Barcelona, losing 2-1 at Camp Nou before winning 2-0 at home. 

Diego Simeone’s team enter this contest in a poor run of form after losing 4-0 on aggregate to Athletic Bilbao in the Spanish Cup. They also lost 2-0 to Cadiz in La Liga.

Despite recent form, Simeone's team have only lost once at home this season, winning all three Champions League games with 11 goals scored.

The Serie A leaders faced Real Sociedad twice during the group stage and drew both games. The 1-1 draw in Spain extended their winless run away to Spanish sides.

Inter Milan have not secured an away victory against a Spanish team in almost two decades. Their last triumph was a remarkable 5-1 triumph over Valencia in 2004.

Since then they have managed two draws and suffered six defeats. If we consider home games, the Nerazzuri have only managed three wins in 17 against La Liga opposition.

Simone Inzaghi’s side have won every game they’ve played in the league in 2024 and are still undefeated away from home this season in all competitions.
