Man United should stick with Andre Onana over potential De Gea reunion says Robbie Savage

Andre Onana has been in the headlines for all the wrong reasons this season as the new Manchester United goalkeeper continues to struggle between the sticks.

The 27-year-old made two significant errors against Galatasaray last Wednesday as the Red Devils squandered a two-goal lead to draw 3-3 in the Champions League.

This was the latest in a series of blunders caused by Onana this season as the Cameroon international struggles to adapt to life at Old Trafford.

The ex-Inter man was brought to United in order to replace the departing David de Gea. The Spaniard is currently without a club, leaving many to ponder whether the Red Devils should’ve kept with the 33-year-old.

Former Premier League midfielder Robbie Savage believes United have to stick with Onana until at least the end of the season.

He told Planet Sport Bet: “Onana is better at playing out from the back, he looks calm and composed doing that, but fundamentally in the big moments, would United have been better off keeping De Gea? I think so.

“I do think they now need to stick with Onana for at least this season. However, if his poor form continues then they should look to replace him with a goalkeeper who can play out, but can also be a better all-round keeper.

“De Gea was really good at keeping the ball out of the back of the net. In his last season he might have made a few mistakes, but he still won four Player of the Season awards at United and the Golden Glove last season!

“It’s not all about Onana because as a collective, Manchester United have been all over the place at times.

“However, people are now starting to ask whether they should re-sign De Gea. I’m not sure that should be the case, because he doesn’t fit Erik ten Hag’s style of playing out from the back.”

United will be looking to bag their sixth Premier League win in seven games when they travel to St James’ Park on Sunday night.
