Nicholls excited by Gold clash
2012-02-07 07:53:20
The experienced trainer is currently preparing his two charges for the big race on March 16, which will be one of the highest profile events of the season.
Kauto Star has been in superb form this term, with successes against the current Cheltenham champion in both the William Hill King George VI Chase and the Betfair Chase.
Nicholls believes both Kauto Star and Long Run will be challenging for the prestigious Gold Cup this year and can’t choose between the two talented runners.
He told the Racing UK podcast: “If Kauto was four years younger, then he would be favourite, but I suppose people think Long Run will be better suited to Cheltenham and he is the champion after all.
“Without a doubt, Kauto is better than last season, and it is difficult to know whether Long Run has improved since last year, so it should bring them closer together.”
