Red Bull team principal Christian Horner insists that his team will go full out at the final grand prix of the season rather than try to defend their lead in the Championship
Sebastian Vettel’s sensational showing in Abu Dhabi in which he came from starting in the pitlane to finishing third, means that the German heads to the penultimate race of the season in the USA with a 10 point lead in the Championship.
While the gap is certainly one that Fernando Alonso can eclipse with 50 points still on offer for the race winners, there may have been a temptation for Red Bull to try and play it safe and protect Vettel’s lead. However, Horner asserts that they certainly won’t be resting on their laurels.
“We know how consistent Fernando has been this year and it was entirely predictable that starting sixth on the grid he was going to be on the podium,” Horner is quoted as saying by adamcooperf1 of the Abu Dhabi GP.
“And so you had mentally got an image of him taking between 15 and 25 points out of us, so to limit that damage to only three and finish behind him is a remarkable recovery. A great drive by Sebastian. Anybody that doubted that he’s a racer, I think he’s showed world class.”
“There’s 50 available, we go in plus 10,” he added of the upcoming races.
“We can’t take anything for granted, we’ve got to go to Austin and attack the weekend. It’s a new track for everybody, and we’ve got to go there and get a good result.”
