Moses plays waiting game

2012-02-16 11:29:52

Wigan Athletic manager Roberto Martinez admits Victor Moses’s future at the club depends on their top-flight status.

Moses, who joined the Latics for £2.25million from Crystal Palace in 2010, still has 18 months left on his contract, but several clubs are keeping tabs on him following some impressive displays.

Martinez revealed that they held initial talks with the Nigerian-born striker, and says he indicated that he will remain at the EW Stadium if Wigan stay in the Premier League.

“He plays a massive role for us and is an important asset. There have been developments in the talks over a new agreement, and I am sure we are going to be able to extend his contract,” he told Lancashire News.

“He has said he wants to stay, but the situation of the club has to be resolved first.

“We have to secure our top-flight status, then we can do it.”

The Wigan boss also heaped praise on the 21-year-old Moses, saying players like him are very rare these days.

“His actions in one-on-ones are sensational, and when you see him in possession, you think he could easily have been born in Holland or Spain,” said Martinez.

“You don’t see many players like that in the modern game. Charles N’Zogbia is one, Lionel Messi another - albeit on a different scale.

“Victor is growing all the time. He is taking responsibility and learning to look up and deliver the final pass, and this is turning into the biggest season of his career.”
