Martinez: We’ll fight the drop

Wigan manager Roberto Martinez believes his players’ strength of character will help them stave off relegation after the 2-1 win over Bolton.

Gary Caldwell netted the opener on Saturday before Mark Davies levelled matters for the Trotters. However, James McArthur scored the winner for the hosts in the 76th minute to clinch the points.

Martinez said in the post-match interview: “We need as many players like James from now until the end of the season.

“There are many things we can control but you need the belief, arrogance and bravery in your make-up.

“It’s easy to play when you’re in the top six but in our position you need an extra bit of mettle.

“We know what it takes and we will fight with our lives to carry on in this league.”
