Ipswich Town have paid tribute to Gary Ablett, who lost his battle with non-Hodgkin Lymphoma.
At the time of the diagnosis of the disease in 2010, former Liverpool, Everton and Birmingham stalwart Ablett was a member of the coaching staff at Ipswich.
Current Tractor Boys coach Paul Jewell and Ablett served their apprenticeship at Liverpool together.
“Gary joined Liverpool as an apprentice a year after me and we were together at Anfield for three or four years,” Jewell told the club’s official website.
“He was a terrific lad. He was only here for a few weeks but the people who were here at the Club at the time say he made a big impression on them.
“That doesn’t surprise me because he was a great lad. It’s a very sad day and my thoughts are with his family.”
Town skipper Grant Leadbitter added to the tributes: “Gary was a genuinely nice guy and a very good coach in the short time that I worked with him,” he said.
“I heard the news yesterday morning before the game and obviously it was very sad to hear.
“He would have done well at this football Club and my thoughts go out to his family at this very sad time.”
