Newcastle striker Leon Best faces a spell on the sidelines after sustaining knee ligament damage on Sunday.
Best suffered the injury during the Magpies’ 2-1 victory over Aston Villa when he collided with Villa defender Stephen Warnock inside the first quarter of the game.
The Republic of Ireland international was forced off the field and will remain out of action for some time.
“Newcastle United can today confirm that Leon Best has sustained medial ligament damage to his left knee,” the club said in a statement.
“The striker was forced off in the early stages of Sunday’s home victory over Aston Villa having picked up an injury while trying to get a shot away.
“After being assessed by the club’s medical staff, Best underwent a scan on Tuesday and will be out for a number of weeks.”
