Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has confirmed that the Gunners will not attempt to extend Thierry Henry’s loan deal at the club.
Henry, an Arsenal legend from his time at the club between 1999 and 2007, arrived at the Emirates Stadium during the January transfer window as cover for Gervinho and Marouane Chamakh who were on international duty at the African Cup of Nations.
The 34-year-old made an immediate impact, coming of the bench to score in an FA Cup tie against Leeds. The striker has made four further appearances, adding another goal to his tally.
With the Major League Soccer season set to get underway on March 10, Henry’s parent club, New York Red Bulls, had agreed that Henry return to the USA after next Wednesday’s Champions League match at AC Milan.
While Aston Villa have attempted to prolong the loan spell of Robbie Keane - another player plying his trade in the MLS - Wenger says Arsenal will not be following suit.
“I would have loved Thierry to stay for two more weeks but he has to go back. It’s only fair on New York,” said the Frenchman.
The decision means that Henry will only be available for two more games - this weekend’s clash with Sunderland and next’s weeks European showdown with Milan.
