Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson supports Tottenham counterpart Harry Redknapp for the England job, provided he commits to it full-time.
The Spurs boss is the odds-on favourite to step into the Three Lions void left by Fabio Capello’s resignation on Wednesday.
While the 64-year-old Englishman has played down speculation linking him with the national post, United rival Ferguson feels Redknapp would be the best pick.
“There is no doubt Harry Redknapp is the best man,” the Red Devils tactician said.
“The press have decided. Harry is the best man.
“He has the experience and personality and the knowledge of the game. He has changed the fortunes of every club he has been at.
“He is the right choice.
“You should try to get the best man with the best qualities. A young manager has no chance.”
Ferguson, though, has warned against accepting a dual-role and juggling club and country commitments having taken on the Scotland job for the 1986 World Cup while Aberdeen manager following the death of Jock Stein.
He added: “I tried it myself with Scotland in Mexico. I found it very difficult.”
