Enrique in it for the trophies

2012-02-17 12:52:46

Jose Enrique says the fact he will be playing in his first cup final later this month is exactly why he originally decided to join Liverpool.

The Reds will contest their first final in five years when they take on Cardiff City in the Carling Cup climax on February 26, while Kenny Dalglish’s men are also still in line for the FA Cup, which sees the team come up against Brighton in the fifth round on Saturday.

The Merseysiders last claimed a piece of silverware in 2006 by lifting England’s longest-running club cup competition, but full-back Enrique, who signed a professional deal at Anfield in August 2011, believes a cup triumph in 2012 is no more than what the club deserves.

“I’m really happy already because we’re in a final and I have never played in one,” he told the club’s official website. “Of course, if we can play in another one it’s even more of a dream.

“This club has big history but it’s not just history we have good players now, the owners want to spend money on players and want to buy good players.

“We have a really good team already but they want to make it better and that’s why I came here.

“I hope it’s the start of something special. That’s why I came here and why many players came here this season. We came because we believe this club is going up and trying to be at the top again. Liverpool have to be there.”
