Brighton 1-0 Newcastle United

An unfortunate deflected second-half own goal from defender Mike Williamson was the only difference between the two teams at the Amex.

It was a scrappy start to the FA Cup encounter with both teams giving the ball away cheaply but Leon Best had the first chance after 10 minutes and dragged his shot from the edge of the box just wide of the upright.

The Magpies striker moments later had time for another effort but this time it went sailing over the crossbar.

Brighton posed little threat to Tim Krul’s goal in the first-half, with Craig Mackail-Smith having an effort from range go high and wide over the target.

In the second-half Newcastle came out the better of the two sides with Brighton keeper Peter Brezovan equal to chances from Shola Ameobi and Yohan Cabaye.

There were few chances but Brighton took the lead against the run of play as Will Buckley picked up the ball and fired a shot towards goal.

The ball hit Newcastle defender Mike Williamson and went past his own helpless keeper to give the Championship outfit the advantage on 76 minutes.

Newcastle created little after the goal and Brighton managed to hold on to book their place in the FA Cup fifth round.
