Any of the three clear market leaders could be sent off as favourite here, with Tenyatta looking the most in-form candidate after a win and a third at Wolverhampton earlier this month, and his chances can only be boosted by his rider’s useful five-pound claim.

Lightning Bay will be looking to go one better than his two encouraging recent runner-up efforts, especially last time out three weeks ago at Lingfield, where he was edged out by the width of Niloufar’s nostrils.

Jack Channon’s lightly-raced maiden Elforleather makes up the bookies’ leading trio, and while those three clearly carry realistic claims, their similar congested prices at the top of the betting make their odds appear individually stingy, which suggests better value could be found elsewhere, especially with four each-way places widely available. 

With that in mind, Archie Watson’s young filly Rasmah could be shaping up to break her duck as she steps up in trip for her handicap debut.

Three appearances on the all-weather tracks at Newcastle and Lingfield have thus far failed to create much cause for optimism, but the feeling is that they have been preliminary outings ahead of a more productive summer campaign on turf.

Whether that improvement is instant on her first attempt remains to be seen, of course, but it seems significant that Watson has chosen to up her distance from her usual one-mile trips, and the extra two furlongs could be just what is needed to bring the best out of this progressive three-year-old.

Watson boasts an impressive 22 percent strike rate at Brighton over the last five seasons, while his 50 percent place rate bodes well for Rasmah’s each-way chances of at least splitting the market principals, even if not able to beat all three of them.
